A critical SSE Airtricity League premier division relegation battle is scheduled for tomorrow evening when Galway United face Sligo Rovers at Eamonn Deacy Park (7.45pm).

As part of Heritage Week, the Terryland Forest Park Alliance is joining once again with the HSE and the Galway City Partnership in calling on the people of Galway city to take part in a ‘Reclaim the City’s Green Spaces’ walk to increase public awareness of the wonderful rich mix of natural landscapes and largely unknown rural lanes or boreens that exist so close to the city centre. The guided walk will begin at 9.30am on Sunday August 27 at ‘The Plots’ sports’ pitches on the Dyke Road.

The Dyke Road was originally known as the Terryland Embankment. In 1847 a group known as The Corrib Development Company applied for compensation claiming they had spent a considerable sum constructing the embankment — at the time the river was prone to serious flooding. The Commissioner for Public Works took over possession of the works after giving evidence in reply to the claim for compensation. They pointed out that the embankment was partially built in 1839, but after the water had risen that winter, it had given way. The company carried out more works of reconstruction in 1840, but the flood waters burst it again. The river would flood on each occasion as far as Castlegar. The embankment was left unfinished until 1845 when the company tried once more but failed to retain the river. They were subsequently compensated. The building of the canal a few years later greatly alleviated the flooding problems.

Members of the public are invited to experience the waterways, wildflower meadows, grasslands, and the woods of Terryland Forest Park in a short nature walk on Saturday, May 13, at 10am. Participants are scheduled to meet at the ‘Plots’ playing pitches on Dyke Road, and the walk will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. It is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The walk is supported by the Terryland Forest Park Alliance, and it aims to increase public awareness of the wonderful rich mix of natural landscapes in the heart of the city.
